DMT: the forbidden mind-altering substance
Banned in the Netherlands since 2018
DMT, or in full N,N-dimethyltryptamine, is a powerful psychedelic drug known for its intense and short trips when smoked. In an Ayahuasca ceremony, the effects last longer.
It occurs naturally in various plants and animals and has been used for centuries in shamanic traditions, especially in South America. There it is often incorporated into ayahuasca, a sacred drink used for spiritual and healing journeys.
The use of DMT
Using DMT can be done in a variety of ways. One of the most common methods is smoking the drug, which leads to a quick and intense experience that usually lasts only 5 to 15 minutes. Within seconds of inhalation, one is often taken on a deep, visual journey that seems to exist outside of normal reality.
Another form of DMT is 5-MeO-DMT, a variant found in certain frog species that evokes a slightly different, often deeply spiritual experience.
Another form of administering this substance is during an Ayahuasca ceremony in which the DMT is then preceded by an MAO inhibitor. People who use medication or have heart problems should not participate in these (now banned) ceremonies.
The effect of DMT
The effect of DMT is difficult to put into words. Many people describe it as a journey into another dimension, seeing complex geometric patterns, encountering entities or experiencing a deep sense of connection. The intensity of the experience can be overwhelming, and some speak of a sense of enlightenment or oneness with the universe.
American researcher Rick Strassman has extensively studied DMT and in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule called it a possible connection between the human mind and other realities.
Risk and caution
Despite the extraordinary experiences, using DMT also carries risks.
In addition, the trip is extremely intense and can be frightening for some, especially if one does not prepare properly. People with mental illness or anxiety disorders are at greater risk for a negative experience. In addition, the effects of DMT can be physically intense, with increased heart rate and blood pressure and vomiting as side effects.
Because DMT occurs naturally in the body, it is not addictive, but it is important to use the substance respectfully and in a safe setting. For those who prepare properly and use DMT in a safe environment, it can be a profound and transformative experience. Yet it is not a substance to be taken lightly. A conscious and responsible approach is essential to get the most out of the experience.
