From Ayahuasca to a truffle ceremony

It's exactly the same travel experience...

I went from ayahuasca to On August 15, I got to experience my first truffle ceremony. What an experience that was.

In the past I have done Ayahuasca once, which didn’t turn out quite right. However, this ceremony had piqued my interest in plant medicine.

So when the truffle ceremony came my way I grabbed this opportunity with both hands.

From Ayahuasca to truffles was basically the same thing

Danielle provided a nice, reassuring and warm atmosphere and made me feel completely at ease. With peace of mind, I could begin my inner journey.

The ceremony and journey were overwhelming, hard to describe, but when I think back on it, it feels very loving and safe. I was able to perceive amazing colors and images, receive loving insights and wise lessons. There was trauma, sadness, wonder, love and also humor.

Now a month and a half later, I am still experiencing the positive effects of the truffle ceremony. I seem to be much better at listening to my feelings and better connected to myself. This is a gift I will definitely give myself again in the future.

Until next time!

Greetings,

Anne

Why people want to switch from Ayahuasca to psychedelic truffles

The world of psychedelic experiences is diverse and rich in opportunities for personal growth, healing and spiritual exploration. Ayahuasca and psychedelic truffles are the two most popular substances used for these purposes. While both substances can offer powerful experiences, there are several reasons why someone might consider switching from Ayahuasca to psychedelic truffles.

Accessibility and legality

One of the main reasons for switching from Ayahuasca to psychedelic truffles is their accessibility and legality. Ayahuasca ceremonies often require travel to specific locations in South America, where the drink has been used legally and traditionally since Ayahuasca became illegal in the Netherlands in 2018. Psychedelic truffles, on the other hand, are legal in the Netherlands and can be safely used there under supervision. This accessibility makes it easier for many people to attend a truffle ceremony without long trips, legal complications or illegal practices.

Physical discomfort vs. comfort

Ayahuasca is known for its powerful physical effects, including nausea and vomiting, which are considered part of the cleansing process. However, these intense physical reactions can be discouraging for some people. Psychedelic truffles typically cause less physical discomfort and are often perceived as milder. This makes truffles an attractive alternative for those seeking a profound psychedelic experience without the severe physical side effects.

Duration of experience

The duration of an ayahuasca ceremony can range from four to six hours or longer, depending on the dosage and individual reaction. Psychedelic truffles offer a shorter experience, usually between three and five hours.

This shorter duration may appeal to people who want an intense psychedelic experience but also need a shorter recovery period and less time commitment.

Mental and emotional impact

Although both ayahuasca and psychedelic truffles can be powerful tools for personal and spiritual growth, they differ in the nature of the mental and emotional experiences they evoke. Ayahuasca is often described as an intensely spiritual and sometimes overwhelming experience that can bring out deep inner traumas and emotions.

Psychedelic truffles also offer profound insights and emotional processing, but are often perceived as somewhat gentler and less confrontational. This makes truffles a suitable choice for people who want to explore their inner world without the intensity often associated with Ayahuasca.

What is the difference between Ayahuasca and truffles?

Ayahuasca and psilocybin truffles are both powerful plant medicines that can evoke deep spiritual and therapeutic experiences. Yet they differ in several ways, including the active ingredients, the effect on the body and how they are used.

An important difference is the use of MAOIs with ayahuasca, which affects the effect and duration of the experience. Ceremonies in which truffles are combined with an MAOI are called psilohuasca.

Active substances and mechanism

Ayahuasca:

Ayahuasca is a South American brew usually composed of two plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the leaves of the Psychotria viridis plant. The active ingredient in the leaves is DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a potent psychedelic compound found naturally in many plants and animals.

By itself, DMT would be rapidly broken down in the human body by the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) in the stomach and liver, so it would have no effect when taken orally.

This is where the Banisteriopsis caapi vine plays a crucial role. This plant contains MAOIs, which prevent DMT from being broken down immediately and therefore remain active in the body. This allows the psychedelic experience to last longer, between 4 and 8 hours. MAO inhibitors are severely nauseating.

Truffles:

Truffles (or magic truffles) contain psilocybin, a psychedelic substance that is converted to psilocin in the body. Psilocin acts directly on the serotonin receptors in the brain and causes hallucinations, altered perception and deep introspection.

Unlike ayahuasca, truffles do not require MAOIs to activate the effect. Psilocybin is easily absorbed and usually acts between 4 and 6 hours, depending on dosage and individual sensitivity.

The experience: what do you feel?

Ayahuasca:

The ayahuasca experience is often described as intense and transformative. Many participants experience deep spiritual insights, visions and emotional purification. Because it is a physically intense process, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are very common. This is seen as a form of “cleansing” in which the body and mind are cleansed.

The experience of ayahuasca can sometimes be overwhelming, with deep confrontations with the subconscious and sometimes frightening visions. The ceremony is often accompanied by a shaman or experienced facilitator, who helps integrate the experience.

Truffles:

Truffles also offer a similar deep psychedelic experience, but it is often perceived as lighter and sweeter than ayahuasca. Colors become more intense, sounds richer and thoughts deeper. Many people experience a heightened sense of love, connection and euphoria.

Truffles can also provide deep insights into personal themes, but the likelihood of intense physical reactions such as nausea and vomiting is much lower than with ayahuasca. This often makes them more accessible to people who want to have a psychedelic experience for the first time.

Duration and intensity

  • Ayahuasca: 4 to 6 hours, sometimes longer. The peak usually lasts around 2-3 hours.
  • Truffles: 3 to 5 hours, with a peak of about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Ayahuasca has a reputation for going deeper into the subconscious and can be perceived as heavier but the experience of psychopaths who have experienced both substances, the trips are similar.

Physical side effects and safety

Ayahuasca:

  • Nausea and vomiting are very common.
  • Can be heavy on the body due to the action of MAOIs.
  • Not suitable in combination with certain medications such as antidepressants (SSRIs) as this may cause dangerous interactions.

Truffles:

  • Less physical discomfort than ayahuasca.
  • Rarely nausea, although this depends on the sensitivity of the user.
  • No interaction with MAOIs, making them safer in combination.
