XTC: origin, effects, risks and use
XTC, also called MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), is one of the most widely used recreational drugs in the world. It is often associated with parties, rave events and dance culture. In this article, we discuss the drug’s origin, its inventor, what exactly it does to you, the risks of Ecstasy and what to expect when you use it.
Origin of XTC and the inventor
Ecstasy was first synthesized in 1912 by the German pharmaceutical company Merck. Originally developed as an intermediate for the production of other drugs, it was never marketed. It was not until the 1970s that XTC was rediscovered.
Scientists discovered the stimulant and consciousness-expanding effects of the substance, and Ecstasy slowly but surely became a popular drug in the recreational sphere. The active ingredient in XTC, MDMA, became increasingly well known through its use in the nightclub scene and at parties.
The XTC pill began its popularity in the 1980s, when it was linked to rave and dance culture. People who use XTC usually seek a euphoric experience in which they feel connected to others.
How does Ecstasy work and what does it do to you?
When you use XTC, MDMA causes your brain to release large amounts of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters play a crucial role in causing the euphoric effects of XTC. The result is heightened sensory perception, a strong need to feel connected to others, and increased energy.
The effects of Ecstasy usually begin within 20 to 60 minutes after taking the XTC pill. The effects reach their peak within 1 to 2 hours, and usually continue for several hours.
During this time, the user usually experiences an increased heart rate, more intense sensory perception (such as more vivid colors and sounds), and the feeling of a deep connection with others. Many people use it occasionally, such as during a party, festival or other social occasion.
Risks of XTC: health problems
Despite the pleasurable effects of XTC, its use carries significant risks. One of the biggest risks of Ecstasy is the risk of overheating. MDMA causes body temperature to rise, which can lead to overheating, especially if you move around a lot in a hot environment, such as a crowded party or club.
The risk of overheating increases if you do not drink enough water or if you exercise too much. This can lead to dehydration, which is dangerous to your health.
The risk of overheating is increased if you use it in combination with other stimulants, such as alcohol. It is important not to take too much XTC per hour to reduce the risk of overheating. In addition, the effects of XTC can quickly deplete your body energy, so you may feel tired and exhausted after taking XTC.
In addition to the physical risks, there are also psychological risks of the drug. Because MDMA depletes the serotonin stores in your brain, the days after using XTC can lead to mood swings, irritability and a feeling of emotional emptiness. This “comedown” effect can persist for days after use, sometimes up to several days. There is also evidence that long-term use of Ecstasy can lead to memory problems and concentration problems.

Crime: illegal trade
The popularity of this drug has led to a thriving illegal market for the drug. XTC pills are often produced in illegal laboratories and trafficked by criminal organizations. Because XTC is an illegal drug, it is difficult for users to guarantee the quality of the pills.
There is a risk that the XTC pills are adulterated or mixed with other dangerous substances, which increases the risks to the user. This makes it even more difficult for users to know what they are actually taking.
Because of its illegality, XTC is often sold in combination with other dangerous substances, increasing the risk of poisoning or serious side effects. Thus, the use of XTC not only affects the health of the user, but also contributes to the crime associated with the production and distribution of XTC.
Using XTC responsibly: what you need to know
If you decide to use XTC, it is important to be aware of the risks and to use dosage wisely. The amount of MDMA in an XTC pill varies, but a standard dose is usually between 80 and 250 mg of MDMA per pill. It is essential not to take too much of the drug per kilogram of body weight to reduce the risks of overheating and other health problems.
