Ayahuasca; drug or sacred plant?
Ayahuasca is banned in the Netherlands
Ayahuasca is a traditional shamanic brew deeply rooted in the cultures of South America. The drink has been used for centuries for spiritual and healing rituals. During an ayahuasca ceremony, people often experience intense visions, emotional breakthroughs and deep insights. But while some people report positive transformations, it is important to remember that the use of ayahuasca is never safe.
The brew contains the substance DMT, a powerful psychedelic compound, and is often combined with Psychotria Viridis and a vine that contains MAO inhibitors. This mixture prevents the DMT in the body from breaking down and becoming active in the brain, which can lead to profound mystical experiences, as well as dangerous physical and psychological reactions.
In this article, we discuss the use of ayahuasca, its active ingredients, the risks of ayahuasca, and why a truffle ceremony may be a safer alternative.
How does ayahuasca work?
The main psychoactive substance in ayahuasca is DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine), a potent hallucinogenic substance that can induce natural visions in the brain. Normally, DMT is broken down directly by the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO). But because ayahuasca includes plants with MAO inhibitors, the breakdown is stopped, leaving the substance DMT active in the body for a long time.
This process leads to intense psychedelic experiences that can last for hours. Participants may have visions, relive past emotions and receive profound insights. Some experience this as healing, but it also carries great risks of ayahuasca.
Risks of ayahuasca: why it is never completely safe
Although many people consider ayahuasca a sacred drink, there are significant dangers associated with its use. Both physical and psychological risks can occur during an ayahuasca ceremony, which should not be underestimated.
1. Physical hazards: blood pressure and heart rate
Ayahuasca can significantly increase blood pressure and heart rate, which can be dangerous for people with heart problems. In some cases, it can cause palpitations, dizziness and fainting.
In addition, ayahuasca often causes nausea and vomiting, an effect known as “La Purga.” This is seen by shamans as a spiritual cleansing, but it can be physically and mentally exhausting.
2. Psychological risks: bad trips and psychiatric problems
Not everyone is suitable for ayahuasca. People with psychiatric problems, such as depression, anxiety disorders or schizophrenia, are at increased risk for psychosis or other negative effects.
In addition, a bad trip can occur, where a person is overwhelmed by fearful and negative visions. This can last for hours and in some cases even lead to long-term psychological symptoms.
3. Legal status and legal problems
In the Netherlands, ayahuasca is illegal. The Supreme Court has ruled that ayahuasca falls under the Opium Act because of the presence of DMT. This means that the use and trafficking of ayahuasca is punishable, even when used in a religious or ceremonial context.
Truffle ceremony as safe and legal alternative
Because ayahuasca is used in illegal and potentially dangerous rituals, many people are looking for a legal and safer alternative. A truffle ceremony offers a similar spiritual experience without the legal and health risks of ayahuasca.
Magic truffles contain psilocybin, a natural substance that is converted in the body to psilocin, a compound that works in a similar way to DMT. The effects of psilocybin can be profound, leading to mystical experiences, emotional healing and heightened awareness.
Advantages of a truffle ceremony over ayahuasca
✅ Legal in the Netherlands – Unlike ayahuasca, magic truffles are legal and can be used without legal problems.
✅ No MAOIs needed – Because psilocybin becomes active directly in the body, no MAOIs are needed. This lowers physical risks and prevents dangerous drug interactions.
✅ Less physical strain – Although nausea may occur, a truffle experience is usually milder than the intense purification effects of La Purga.
✅ More psychologically accessible – A truffle ceremony is perceived as gentler than ayahuasca, making it more suitable for beginners and those with mental vulnerabilities.
What can you expect from a truffle ceremony?
As with the use of ayahuasca, a truffle ceremony begins with an intention. Participants are guided in a safe environment where they can fully surrender to the experience.
The following effects may occur during the ceremony:
🌿 Profound insights and spiritual connections
🌿 Emotional processing and healing
🌿 Feelings of connection with nature and the universe
🌿 A state of inner peace and acceptance
The ceremony is followed by an integration process in which the insights gained are incorporated.
