Hallucinogens: gateways to deeper insights
For when you really want to improve your life
Hallucinogens are also known as psychedelic or mind-altering substances. These substances have a powerful impact on consciousness and can lead to deep insights and spiritual experiences.
Ancient civilizations, such as the Mayans, Egyptians and indigenous peoples of South America, have used these substances for thousands of years to contact higher dimensions and unlock hidden knowledge.
What are hallucinogens?
Hallucinogens are substances that can temporarily and drastically alter the perception of reality. The word hallucinate comes from the Latin word hallucinari, which means “dreaming” or “imagining. This reflects well how these substances work: they distort sensory perceptions and can induce visual hallucinations.
This can range from subtle changes in colors and patterns to wandering completely in the mind and experiencing a different reality.
Different types of hallucinogens
There are different types of psychedelic drugs, each with their own characteristics and effects. Some well-known hallucinogens are:
- LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide): One of the most well-known psychedelics. The effects can last up to 12 hours (especially lsd) and provide intense experiences with deep introspection and changes in time and space.
- Psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms and truffles): This natural hallucinogenic substance causes euphoria, visual hallucinations and a heightened sense of connection with the environment.
- DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) and 5-MeO-DMT: Powerful hallucinogens that induce a deep psychedelic journey within minutes. Often used in ayahuasca ceremonies.
- 5-MeO-DMT: A more potent form of DMT derived from the Colorado River toad (Bufo Alvarius).
- Mescaline (from Peyote and San Pedro cacti): Used by indigenous peoples in spiritual rituals. Provides colorful visual hallucinations and deep insights.
- LSA (Lysergic acid amide): Related to LSD, but milder and with a more natural effect.
- Ibogaine: From the roots of the Iboga plant, used in African rituals and researched for addiction treatment.
- Ketamine: Although ketamine is used primarily as an anesthetic, in low doses it also has a psychedelic effect and is being investigated for the treatment of mental health problems.
- MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine): Also known as party drug ecstasy or XTC. Has both stimulant and hallucinatory effects, increases empathy and connectedness and is therefore being investigated for therapeutic purposes.
- Salvia Divinorum: A unique hallucinogenic herb with short but very intense effects that can completely disrupt the sense of time and space.
Benefits and risks of hallucinogens
The use of psychedelic substances can lead to profound insights, spiritual revelations and even therapeutic breakthroughs in people with mental health problems such as depression and PTSD. Research shows that psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms and truffles, can have a positive impact on mental health and creativity.
Yet there are also risks. An unwanted or intense experience can lead to a bad trip, where anxiety, paranoia and confusion take over. Therefore, it is important to use these substances in a safe, supervised environment.
Moreover, some hallucinogens are illegal in many countries, while others, such as truffles in the Netherlands, are legally available under certain circumstances.

Hallucinogens open doors to other states of consciousness and provide opportunities for self-discovery and healing. Ancient civilizations already knew this, and modern science is now rediscovering the benefits of these substances. If used responsibly, psychedelic substances can be a powerful tool for personal growth and spiritual development.
We describe the substance 5-meo dmt on another page. The hallucinogenic effects are also called psychedelic experiences.
