Visual hallucinations during psychedelic travel

Psilocybin also has much to offer you

Visual hallucinations are images, colors or patterns that you see, when in reality they are not there. During a psychedelic trip, such as through the use of substances like LSD, truffles or magic mushrooms, these hallucinations can occur. They can range from subtle distortions to intense, surreal visions that cross the boundaries of reality.

How do visual hallucinations occur?

Visual hallucinations during a psychedelic trip occur because substances such as LSD, psilocybin (in truffles and magic mushrooms) or DMT affect the action of certain substances in the brain. In particular, serotonin, a neurotransmitter, is affected, changing the way you perceive the world. This causes you to see images that are not there in the real world.

Psychedelic substances disrupt the normal functioning of your brain, leading to visual hallucinations. How intense the hallucinations are depends on the dose of the substance, your mental state and the environment in which you take the trip.

What can you see during a psychedelic trip?

During a psychedelic trip, visual hallucinations can take many different forms. Some people see simple color changes or patterns that repeat. Others experience complete, detailed visions of changing landscapes, geometric shapes or even people and animals.

Some examples of visual hallucinations are:

  • Color changes and patterns: Colors can appear much more intense, or you can see patterns moving around the room.
  • Distortion of objects: Things in your environment may look different than normal, such as appearing larger or smaller or changing shape.
  • Faces and figures: Sometimes faces, human figures or animals that are not real appear.
  • Full scenes: You can also see entire scenes that you cannot imagine in reality, such as alien environments or fantastic worlds.

The intensity of visual hallucinations

The intensity of visual hallucinations depends on several factors. Hallucinations come and go during the trip. The dose of the psychedelic substance plays a big role in this. At a low dose, you may see subtle distortions, such as objects moving or colors changing. At higher doses, the hallucinations can be much stronger, even changing your entire environment.

In addition, your mental state plays an important role. If you feel relaxed, the hallucinations can be mild and pleasant. However, if you feel anxious or stressed, the hallucinations can actually become confusing and frightening.

Visual hallucinations and other senses

Visual hallucinations during a psychedelic trip often go hand in hand with other sensory changes. For example, you may hear sounds that are not there, such as music or voices.

Some people even experience synesthesia, where senses blend together – for example, seeing colors when hearing music. This is because the psychedelic substances affect not only your visual perceptions, but also other senses.

The spiritual side of visual hallucinations

Many people experience visual hallucinations during psychedelic trips as spiritual or deeply meaningful. They see symbols, entities or scenes that have special meaning to them. These hallucinations can be seen as a way to connect with the subconscious or gain insight into life.

Some people regard visual hallucinations as a kind of epiphany. For example, they gain new insights about themselves, their emotions or their life path. For others, the visions can intensify the experience of the psychedelic journey, helping to understand deep feelings or thoughts.

Risks and challenges of visual hallucinations

Although visual hallucinations are often experienced as beautiful and meaningful, they can also be confusing or frightening. This is especially common when a person is not properly prepared or when the dose is too high. In some cases, the hallucinations can be so intense that you have difficulty understanding what is real and what is not. This can lead to confusion, anxiety or panic.

Another challenge is that visual hallucinations can sometimes evoke unpleasant images or visions. This can be the case, for example, in a “bad trip,” where the experience is negative or frightening. Therefore, it is important to be in a safe environment, preferably with someone familiar, and to be well prepared.
